Bridging Troubled Waters

Bridging Troubled Waters is a series of photographic works exploring water quality at Te Waihora.

Te Waihora holds local, regional and national importance for its cultural, natural and recreational qualities yet it remains one of Aotearoa’s most polluted lakes. As a result, Te Waihora has developed a reputation amongst many as a place with diminished value, a perception that has existed for many years and persists today.

Combining analogue, alternative and experimental photographic processes, the works presented are intrinsically linked to place, highlighting Te Waihora’s unique character along with some of the challenges it is currently facing. Creating an exhibition which steps away from the norm provides an alternative platform for connection with the lake and tributaries.  Presenting works that are multi-layered in both narrative and aesthetic is an essential element for the development of new knowledge, consideration of different perspectives, and emotional connection.

Drawing on indigenous world views and holistic sustainable management models, an immersive exhibition style has been chosen, referencing ideas of interconnectedness.  The large-scale prints are intended to provide a sense of being in and a part of the land, presenting an alternative perspective as to how we view our relationship with the natural environment.
