Applied Visual Arts

Caitlin Brown

Texture plays a big part in my work, each layer contributing to an amalgamation of history, perspective and visual intrigue. My main medium of knitting, stems from a multi-generational skill, now accompanied by research into sustainability and colonial aspects of woollen fibre itself. Each material has been analysed and sourced with intention alongside these values. The imagery and motifs in my pieces have been collated from knitting machine manuals, personal notes and family photographs. Some of these motifs I abstracted from the various textures and stitches in hand knitting. This series comes from a place of deconstructing identity in a way that highlights people's presence, the marks and items people leave behind as a sign of being. Each piece has a unique shape and makeup, a physical manifestation of the idea that many layers of identity create a whole.
