My work illustrates the historical erasure of women’s lives. This year I have researched documentation of medieval women’s lives and deaths. Medieval women were often forgotten in official documents, 60 percent of those mentioned are left with no name. They are forgotten by history with the anguish of how they lived and died never coming to light. Their lives were often determined by the church, and they were constantly pushed down the hierarchy. I choose to paint some of these women in an Art Nouveau style, juxtaposing the often-gruesome reality of their lives with a sense of style and beauty; honouring their lives and giving their stories a voice so they are not forgotten again.
The paintings are made using a combination of hand-made and digital media and are presented as a concertina, referencing the historical notion of a modesty screen. They are full of details that provide clues as to how these women lived and died.
