Emily Hickling

How many distinct ways has culture impacted your life and shaped your personal experiences?

Through my works I explore my personal multicultural identity, family background, and themes of loss, distance, separation, and emptiness, to highlight my experiences with loss of culture and lost loved ones. I use a variety of collected family resources throughout all my works. My research focused on significant relationships, experiences, objects, and places, which I incorporate into my art. I represent and utilise my research findings in my works as motifs and symbols.

Experimenting with bringing different methods, materials and mediums together, such as printmaking, embroidering over prints, overlapping, and different printmaking methods together, I delve into breaking the norms of traditional printmaking in my works as a way of acknowledging and representing my multicultural identity and background.
