I want the brain to light up and the hands to itch to touch. I like to create tactile, textured worlds in which a viewer can become immersed and find sensory joy. In the past my primary focus has been on acrylic painting, drawing and embroidery. This year my practice has expanded to explore linocut and collage, which has introduced movement and a feeling of playfulness into my work. The repetitive process of linocut and the meditative, trance-like state of piecing together collage generates a space for me to explore childhood, nostalgia and memories without becoming mired in the recollection.
Printmaking and collage have proven to be apt mediums to fabricate worlds wherein the viewer can reside for a while.
As well as teasing out imagery from childhood I've been drawing research from literature, particularly fictional autobiography. By applying the literary technique of fictional autobiography to my artistic practice, I open another way to explore emotions with some protective, healthy distance.
