Growing up is a path that everyone has to take. And not every path looks the same, nor is everyone’s memory of their path reliable. The concept of growing up is an overarching idea, that I felt compelled to further explore through my work. This led me to research the topic of “Childhood Amnesia” and how we begin to experience this when we reach adulthood.
My aim for this year was to create a visual representation, of what it looked like growing up in New Zealand in the early 2000s. Overall, I wanted people of my generation to reminisce about these images, and help remind them of the things they saw and were surrounded by growing up.
I have used pattern in my paintings, as a visual device. To represent both fabric and the abstract photographic source images. For this installation, I used various different types of media such as highly pigmented acrylic paints, screen print, and coloured markers for details.
